Come to Bernardsville Public Library on Tuesday, October 22 at 7:00 pm to hear some overlooked but fascinating aspects of the reign of Constantine the Great (died A.D. 337). Our speaker is Dr. David Greenwood, Honorary Fellow at the University of Aberdeen, who believes that, as both an undefeated emperor and the first Christian emperor of Rome, Constantine is an historical figure who merits attention. “Despite his long reign,” he says, “there are evidential gaps and conflicting accounts that lead to his life, actions, and beliefs being highly disputed. Often, those disputes are more colorful than constructive, and the Constantine argued for is less of a real person and more of a projection.”

Dr. Greenwood holds a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh. His journal articles about the later Roman Empire have appeared in Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Ancient Philosophy, Classical Quarterly, Classical Philology, and Translation and Literature, among others.

There is no charge to attend the program; advance registration is requested. Click here to sign up.
